The Value of Backlinks in 2017

Ok so by now you’ve noticed how important we think backlinks are (and its not just our opinion, almost any SEO expert knows how important these links are). Needless to say, we have stressed the importance of backlinks because they tell search engines that your website is worth reading and should be placed higher up on the list.

But not all backlinks are created equal. No! In fact, some of these links are a lot more powerful than others, and some are downright poor in quality and could even hurt your website and your ranking in the SERPs.

What Types of Backlinks Exist?

Every SEO specialist knows that there are four types of backlinks. These include:

  1. Contextual
  2. Comment
  3. Backlink poison
  4. Spammy backlinks

Generally, you want to focus on contextual backlinks for your website. A good contextual backlink is a lot more powerful than any other type of backlink out there.

What is a Contextual Backlink?

A contextual backlink is a link which another website owner places within the body of their content. In other words, when someone else cites your information within his content. Search engines like this type of backlink as it is a genuine and honest one that denotes expertise. And that is valuable for the reader, however, getting this type of backlink can be a little difficult, especially if you want it from a high Authority website.

Some SEO specialist use a variety of methods to get this type of backlink. For instance, they might use the broken link building strategy. In this strategy the website owner will contact other websites and inform the webmaster when there are broken links on a page. In exchange for this information, one webmaster will ask another to replace a broken link with a functioning one. Naturally the functioning link points back to the webmasters website.

Another option is to offer to guest blog. This is where you write the blog for another website and include a link to your website.

Blog Commenting

Another practical way to get backlinks is through blog commenting. This is not as effective a method as contextual links but it still works. You want to look for blogs in your industry, especially those that have a nice readership. Don’t make those annoying comments like great post or I feel similarly. But instead you want to read the article and make an appropriate comment and only make a comment when you have something to add to the article or post.

Poison backlinks

Just as there are good backlinks there are also some that are not good or what we call poison links. When you are looking through websites to analyze their backlinks you may have noticed that there are some websites we’re all of the backlinks going to one page. This type of backlink can get you in trouble with Google and the search engines, and instead of ranking you higher, you will be ranked lower as a  penalty.

Other type of poison backlinks include International domains that are not relevant to your industry. For instance if you are serving a u.s. market, it may seem weird that your page only links to Russian and Chinese websites.

Spammy Backlinks

Spam backlinks are similar to poison backlinks. Usually this type of backlink points from a poorly-written blog or a directory to your website. It is a place that usually charges you to allow you to put your article on their site and point a backlink to your site. At one time these types of backlinks were very popular but Google nullified this when it came out with the Penguin updates. Other types of spam backlinks include buying domains that have words that relate to your industry. In some cases when done correctly this can still work but it is losing its effectiveness.

Bottom Line

In truth, the best type of backlink is the one you can’t control. It comes from people who like your content and share it. The best way to get these type of Bank links is to create quality content on your blog, and then make it available through social media. press releases and other means so that people can read it and share it. Google just doesn’t give a lot of credit to websites where everyone can access and place links on. And unfortunately this happens with blog comments, forums and low-quality article sites or directories.

Spam links just don’t work any longer. To succeed with SEO you have to do the work, get quality links and make those connections. It is a slow and steady process, not one where you can add thousands of links from one or two sites and be done with it.
